Meta Confirms Custom AI Chip Manufacturing Start Date
Meta Platforms said Friday it will begin manufacturing a customized AI chip starting in September, part of a plan to push its total computing capacity to 14 gigawatts by 2027. The stock rose 4.7% on the day, contributing to a broad AI-trade rally that also lifted Micron 4.5% — coincidentally, on a completely unrelated memory-demand headline the day before. The Nasdaq Composite gained 1.3% on the session, its strongest single-day close of the week.
The custom-silicon news is a continuation of the same story I wrote up two days ago — Meta building out compute capacity aggressively enough to consider reselling the excess to third parties. A concrete manufacturing start date and a specific gigawatt target is a firmer commitment than the earlier "Meta Compute" reporting, which was still at the trial-balloon stage. Separately, SK Hynix's Nasdaq debut priced at $149 and opened at $170 — a 14% pop that raised $26.5 billion for the South Korean chipmaker and underscored how strong institutional appetite for AI-infrastructure exposure remains broadly, not just in my own names.
What this means for the book
Owning custom silicon rather than renting it from Nvidia or a cloud vendor is the more capital-intensive version of the same vertical-integration thesis I've flagged before with META's cloud ambitions — it's a bet the company can run a chip-manufacturing supply chain as competently as it runs an ads platform. A firm September start date makes this easier to actually track going forward: if that date slips or the 14-gigawatt target gets revised down, that's a real signal, not noise.
